JOURNAL OF ACADEMIC RESEARCH & WRITING

Ka Hue ANAHĀ

I was part of a small collaborative team tasked with developing two distinct cover concepts for the creative journals published by Kapi‘olani Community College's Board of Student Publications. My role included brainstorming visual directions, evaluating and selecting student artwork using a rubric-based grading system, and choosing a typefaces that support ‘okina and kahakō for accurate Hawaiian language representation and Japanes kanji. I also designed the final layout and prepared print-ready files for publication.

Exploring multiple ideas before defining the solution

brainstorming process

I explored a wide range of typeface pairings, testing them at multiple sizes to ensure readability and visual balance. I printed iterations to evaluate how the typography performed in physical form, refining combinations so they complemented one another effectively. I also reviewed past journal issues and analyzed contemporary magazine layouts to inform hierarchy, composition, and overall structure.
