brainstorming process
Through brainstorming and word mapping, I identified key themes and symbols for each story. This process helped me distill complex narratives into simple visual concepts that could be effectively represented on the book covers. This approach ensured that the designs were not only visually appealing but also deeply connected to the essence of each story.

The Tapeworm Is In
David Sedaris humorously describes learning French through cassette tapes and a Walkman, later joking he became a “tapeworm” from constantly listening to audio. Inspired by this, I used a cassette tape as the main visual to evoke nostalgia, with tangled tape representing the messy process of learning, and clean Helvetica type bridging past and present.

Big Boy
David Sedaris recounts a mortifying moment at an Easter dinner when he finds an unflushable mess in the toilet and panics about being blamed, eventually fixing it with a plunger. For the cover, I used a simple wooden stool as a subtle visual reference, paired with bold Copperplate Std type to reflect the story's playful, embarrassing humor.

A Shiner Like A Diamond
David Sedaris reflects on his sister Amy being featured in a magazine, where their father praises her beauty while she playfully mocks his expectations. For the cover, I used dying flowers and wrinkled wrapping to suggest imperfection, with a faint studio light hinting at the photoshoot, and elegant italic type to match her sophisticated yet subversive presence.
